The "Others" Category
Students learn why "Others" category foods are not included in the Five Food Groups. They also sort Food Cards to review what foods are in the Five Food Groups and in the "Others" category.
Activity Outcomes
Students will be able to:
- Associate foods from the Five Food Groups as "nutritious" foods that are good for them
- State that they should eat from all Five Food Groups every day because each food group helps keep their body healthy in a different way
- Explain what the "Others" category is
- Identify at least three foods that are in the "Others" category
- State that its okay to eat foods in the "Others" category, but not too often
Materials and Advance Prep
- Pull two cards for each food group from your Pyramid Food Cards set and shuffle (see Meet the Milk Group Activity)
- Set aside three "Others" category Food Cards: candy, cookies and soft drink
- "Others" category Food Cards PDF worksheet (1 per student) Save class time by having students prepare as homework.
- Markers or crayons; scissors
- Draw a large outline of the Food Guide Pyramid on the chalkboard or a poster board
- Tape
- Five Food Group Check PDF assessment (1 per student)
- Pyramid Cafe® Mini-Poster PDF (1 per student)
What to Do
Assessment
- Distribute and have students complete the Five Food Group Check worksheet.
- Review and have students correct.
