Rating: 3.5 Stars

Make Friends with the Fruit Group
Students learn which foods are in the Fruit Group and learn that these foods help their bodies heal cuts and bruises. They identify fruits they like to eat and then help Berry Clear-skin shop for fruits at The Farmer's Market.

Activity Outcomes
Students will be able to:
  • Name at least three foods in the Fruit Group
  • State how Fruit Group foods help keep them healthy
  • Name different types of plants on which fruits grow
  • Classify fruits according to personal criteria
Materials and Advance Prep
  • Make Friends with the Fruit Group PDF worksheet (1 per student)
  • Fruit Group Food Cards PDF worksheet (1 per student) Save class time by having students prepare as homework
  • Markers or crayons; scissors
  • Kiwi, papaya or cantaloupe (Enough for each student to taste)
  • Knife to cut fruit
  • Napkins (1 per student)
  • Food Card Sort PDF worksheet (1 per student)
  • The Farmer's Market PDF assessment (1 per student) Decide whether to use as homework, seat work or a test.
What to Do
  • Begin the lesson with a quick review:
    • Think about what you've learned about the Milk Group (Activity 3)
    • Who can tell me one thing you learned?
    • Who can tell me another?
    • Anything else?

Repeat for the Meat and Vegetable Groups (Learn About the Meat Group and Visit the Vegetable Group)

  • Distribute the Make Friends with the Fruit Group worksheet. Read the title, Berry's quote, and the "Fruit Group Foods" section aloud.
  • As a class, read the names of the fruits pictured on the worksheet. Read "What Fruits Grow Where?" and have students answer the questions.
  • Show the class the fruit you brought in. Ask students to guess how many seeds are inside the fruit. Cut the fruit open and show them the seeds.
  • Distribute and review the foods on the Fruit Group Food Cards worksheet. Have students color and cut the cards. Direct students to sort them using the Food Sort worksheet (See Meet the Milk Group, Step 5).

Note: Cut up the fruit while students are working.

  • When students are done, have them report the number of cards they placed in each section.
  • Offer the students a taste of the cut up fruit. Encourage everyone to taste it, but let them know it's okay if they don't want to.
  • Have students return to their Make Friends with the Fruit Group worksheet. Ask them to follow along silently as you read "Healthy Skin Is Important" aloud. Also read "Berry's Good Health Tip."

Assessment

  • Distribute The Farmer's Market worksheet. Review the directions and have students complete it.
  • Review and have students make corrections.

Going Further
