Dinosaur Dinosaur I-Can-Help Recipes I-Can-Help Recipes

Grade Level: Pre-k / K
Rating: 4 Stars

Synopis:
Students help prepare a dip and taste it with several vegetables.

Students will be able to:

  • Identify vegetables and describe their color, smell and feel.
  • State that vegetables help us see in the dark.
  • Wash hands, assist with preparation, and taste Dinosaur Dip.
  • Read a rebus recipe for Dinosaur Dip.
  • Help count and record the results for a tasting survey.

Material and Advance Prep:

  • Print Dinosaur Dip rebus recipe (PDF); recopy it onto a large paper, poster board or chalkboard if you wish.
  • Raw vegetables such as celery, carrots, broccoli florets, green and red peppers, jicama, cucumber, tomatoes so each child has 2 to 3 tastes
  • Wash and cut vegetables into bite-size pieces
  • Ingredients and equipment for Dinosaur Dip
  • Small plates and napkins (1 each for every student)
  • Serving spoon
  • Review Take A Tasting Survey
  • Tasting Chart
  • Tasting Passports PDF
  • Stickers or rubber stamp for Tasting Passports
  • Optional: Food Matters Family Newsletter PDF (1 per student)
  • Optional: Sheet Music "Fantastic Jurassic Dip" (PDF)

What to Do:

  1. Introduce the activity by writing the letter "D" on the board. Ask students to name some words begin with the letter D. Read (or sing) "Fantastic Jurassic Dinosaur Dip." Which words in "Fantastic Jurassic Dinosaur Dip" begin "D"? Read (or sing) "Fantastic Jurassic Dinosaur Dip," but this time have the children clap every time they hear the words "dinosaur" and "dip."
  2. Ask children what foods dinosaurs ate. Ask what vegetables plant-eating dinosaurs might eat if they were alive today? Tell children that they are going to taste some vegetables and also make a "Dinosaur Dip" for the vegetables. Briefly talk about what a "dip" is and how we eat it.
  3. Have all students wash their hands. Review the rebus recipe as you prepare it. Tasks children can help with include:
    • Wash the work table
    • Measure the sour cream and add it to the bowl
    • Measure and add the yogurt to the bowl
    • Pour the salad dressing mix into the bowl
    • Stir the mixture
    • Help clean up
  4. When the dip is ready, hold up the vegetables one at a time. Identify each vegetable and pass it around, asking children to describe the color, smell and feel of it. As you discuss the vegetables, tell children that vegetables help us stay healthy and see in the dark.
  5. Model "trying new foods" by tasting each vegetable in front of your students. Take a taste of each vegetable with dip.
  6. Give each student a plate. Let them select a few vegetables, measure a spoonful of dip and sample the vegetables with the dip.
  7. Add Munchies with Dinosaur Dip to the Tasting Chart. Take a tasting survey. Have children help count the results and record them on the Tasting Chart. Stamp the Tasting Passport for children who tasted the dip.
  8. Optional: Send home a copy Food Matters Family Newsletter.
